Quick Recap : Day 8

Nick Kyrgios, warming up in the Lakers jersey paying tribute to the late Kobe Bryant.

It was a day when emotions ran high not only at Melbourne park, but all over the world. Kobe Bryant transcended the boundaries of sport, not only through his basketball prowess, but also through his humanitarian deeds. The sadness and the heartache could be felt all over the tennis fraternity.

Simona Halep continued her rich vein of form brushing aside Elise Mertens of Belgium. Garbine Muguruza knocked out Kiki Bertens in straight sets to book her place in the last 8. Angelique Kerber fell short against Pavlyuchenkova. The German’s service deserted her in the deciding third set, conceding three games on serve. It’s an interesting quarter finals lineup on the women’s side headlined by the match between Ash Barty and Petra Kvitova.

On the men’s side, Dominic Thiem hit his peak form, winning in straight sets against Gael Monfils. Alexander Zverev also impressed with another routine straight sets victory against Andrey Rublev. Stan Wawrinka played his second 5-set match of the tournament and he was able to comeback from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Daniil Medvedev. The day ended with the highly anticipated clash between World number one Rafael Nadal and Australia’s very own Nick Kyrgios. The match did not disappoint. Kyrgios showed his true Aussie grit in the third and fourth sets. He looked down for the count in the fourth but suddenly found energy in his reserves to counter punch. He got the break back and pushed the set into a tiebreak. If it was not for the ever improving serve of Nadal, we would have most definitely witnessed a fifth set.

Men’s singles Quarter finals line up

The men’s quarterfinal is now all set and there are some mouth watering clashes that we cannot wait for. Rafael Nadal vs Dominic Thiem is our pick. They played an epic match at the 2018 US Open. This one down under should just be as good given the fantastic run of form both the players are in.
