The action is starting to heat up at the Australian Open and Day 3 saw bore witness to some epic battles.
On the men’s side, it was a bad day for seeded players with 5 seeded players getting knocked out. Benoit Paire, who is in good form coming into the tournament, lost a tough 5th set tiebreak against the big hitting Marin Cilic. Grigor Dimitrov also made his exit, losing the 5th set tiebreaker against American Tommy Paul. Number 8 seed Mario Berrettini cracked under pressure from Tennys Sandgren. The highly anticipated second round match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Philip Kohlschreiber did not materialize as the German withdrew due to injury. Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer hardly broke sweat in their second round matches with both registering straight set victories. Milos Raonic kept the Canadian flag flying high with a straight sets win.
On the women’s side, Australian hope Ash Barty’s progress to the third round was smooth as silk while Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff won their respective second round matches to set up a tantalizing third round encounter against each other. Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the third round at the last grand slam of her career and remains on course to meet Serena Williams, who had a relatively easy outing against Tamara Zidansek, in the fourth round.
