Australian Open : Last 8 preview and predictions

Cheng

So, we are into week two of the Australian Open and some big names are missing from action. Our prediction for the quarterfinals before the tournament started was this :

Rafael Nadal vs Marin Cilic

Grigor Dimitrov vs Jack Sock

Alexander Zverev vs Dominic Thiem

Roger Federer vs David Goffin

And lets take a look at the actual last 8 :

Rafael Nadal vs Marin Cilic

Grigor Dimitrov vs Kyle Edmund

Tennys Sandgren vs Hyeon Chung

Roger Federer vs Tomas Berdych

The surprise entries in that list are definitely Tennys Sandgren and Hyeon Chung. Both these men have been the stories of the tournament so far. The men’s draw was thrown wide open primarily because of their extraordinary run. Its going to be a first grand slam quarterfinal for both and it will be heartbreaking to see one of them lose. Kyle Edmund is a another surprise package and he quietly made it through to the last eight with impressive wins against some quality players. He will be playing Grigor Dimitrov, who is super confident after that victory against Nick Kyrgios.

Tomas Berdych is back to his best but is again running into Roger Federer in red hot form. The Swiss Champion holds an impressive record against the Czech. The last time Berdych won against Federer was in early 2013. Rafael Nadal will be wary of the danger posed by Marin Cilic. Although the head to head is heavily in favor of the Spaniard, Cilic has enough potential to cause an upset.

Our semi-final prediction:

Rafael Nadal vs Grigor Dimitrov

Hyeon Chung vs Roger Federer
