Day six of the Australian Open started with a marathon match on the women’s side. World number one Simona Halep beat Lauren Davis 15-13 in the fifth set. At 3 hours and 44 minutes, it was the third longest women’s match in Australian Open history. All eyes were on the match between Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova but the match failed to live up to the expectations. The German quickly overcame the Russian challenge in just over an hour.
Tennys Sandgren, who is beginning to make a name for himself with impressive wins against top players, is through to the fourth round beating Marterer in four sets. Dominic Thiem, who will be Tennys’ fourth round opponent, cruised to a straight sets victory against Mannarino. The first upset of the day on the men’s side was caused by Hyeon Chung when he defeated Alexander Zverev in five sets. Marton Fucsovics made it to the fourth round, where he is due to meet Roger Federer. The Swiss registered a comfortable straight sets victory against Richard Gasquet. Tomas Berdych was at his impressive best as he routed Juan Martin del Potro in a surprisingly one sided match. Novak Djokovic too looked in sublime touch as he cruised to the fourth round where he will be meeting Hyoen Chung.
We will be looking at the line up for the fourth round in our next post.
