Nick Kyrgios was in impressive form against Jo-Wlifried Tsonga in his third round match at the Australian Open

Day 5 of the Australian saw some exciting tennis on both the men’s and women’s side of the draw. Kyle Edmund, the only Brit remaining in the draw, continued his dream run, beating beating Nikoloz Basilashvili in an extremely close five setter. Grigor Dimitrov was at this best dispatching Andrey Rublev in four quick sets. As predicted by us in the Day five preview,  Andreas Seppi vs Ivo Karlovic proved to be a match of attrition. The match featured three tiebreaks and a fifth set that ended 9-7 in favor of the Italian. Diego Schwartzman looked good in his four set win against Alexandr Dolgopolov. His opponent in 4th round, Rafael Nadal was in sublime touch Dzumhur.

All eyes were on the Kyrgios-Tsonga match and the Australian did not disappoint his home crowd. Both the players were in good serving form and three of the four sets were decided in a tiebreak. It seemed the match was going into the fifth set when Tsonga was leading the tiebreak 5-2 in the fourth. But Kyrgios came storming back and wrapped up the set and the match in the presence of Hollywood superstar Will Smith. Marin Cilic came through a tough test against Ryan Harrison.

On the women’s side, reigning French open champion Jelena Ostapenko crashed out of the tournament. She lost her 3rd round match to Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.Marta Kostyuk’s amazing run at the tournament ended after she lost to World number 4 and compatriot Elina Svitolina. The 15 year old was visibly disappointed but she has a long career ahead of her. Caroline Wozniacki came through Kiki Bertens to make it to the fourth round.
