We are slowly getting into the thick of things at this year’s Australian Open. It has only been two days and it already feels like a great tournament. The 64 best players are through to round two and there are some great matches to look forward to on day three.
Giant killers Zhang Shuai, who took out the US champion Sloane Stephens, and Belinda Bencic, who upset Venus Williams in the first round, start the proceedings on the ladies side. Jelena Ostapenko is in action too.
On the men’s side all eyes will be on the Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov as he faces a strong opponent in Jo-wilfried Tsonga. The Canadian is good enough to cause an upset. Denis Istomin, who caused the upset of the tournament last year by taking out Novak Djokovic, faces English man Kyle Edmund. The match is likely to be a tight five setter. Yuichi Sugita, who played the match of his career against Jack Sock in the first round, squares off against the big serving Ivo Karlovic. World number one Rafael Nadal is likely to be tested against Leonardo Mayer. Mayer gave a tough fight to the Spaniard at last year’s US Open.
