Australian open draw : Federer, Djokovic face stern test in a tough draw

AO

Roger Federer holds aloft the Norman Brookes Challenge cup after his victory against Rafael Nadal in the final of Australian open in 2017.

The much awaited draw of the Australian open took place in a glittering ceremony on the Margaret Court arena in the presence of defending men’s singles champion Roger Federer and former women’s singles winner Maria Sharapova.

Nadal in the top half has an easier draw compared to Federer. The Spaniard’s first real test can be against John Isner in the fourth round. The bottom half though is packed with some mouth watering match ups. Defending champion Roger Fedreer and six time champion Novak Djokovic share the quarter with Juan Martin Del Potro, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, Dadiv Goffin, Alexander Zverev and Tomas Berdych. This is probably the most interesting draw in recent memory. The Australian open has always been the stage for some mind boggling upsets. It also has been the stage for some scintillating comebacks. It will be an interesting battle between senior statesmen like Federer, Nadal, Djokivic and the younger crop.

Its a tough draw to predict but going by the official seeding this how the quarter final line up looks like :

Rafael Nadal vs Marin Cilic

Grigor Dimitrov vs Jack Sock

Alexander Zverev vs Dominic Thiem

Roger Federer vs David Goffin

Its a blockbuster line up and one that the organizers would be praying for. But we think its going to be slightly different. Our prediction for the tournament :

Quarter Finals :

Rafael Nadal vs Marin Cilic

Grigor Dimitrov vs Jack Sock

Novak Djokovic vs Stan Wawrinka

Roger Federer vs Juan Martin Delpotro

Semi Finals :

Rafael Nadal vs Grigor Dimitrov

Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic

Finals :

Roger Federer vs Grigor Dimitrov

As any tennis fan knows, most of the matches at this level are too close to call and we know everyone likes to see a Fedal final, but we think Grigor Dimitrov is finally going to  take that big leap. He was so close last year but lost an agonizingly close semi final against Nadal. This time we think he is ready. Roger Federer looks in ominous touch and his toughest test can be against Juan Martin del potro. The Argentinian is known to cause some problems to the Swiss on the big stage. Novak Djokovic is a force to reckon with at the year’s first grandslam. He holds the record for the most number of Australian open trophies and he will be itching to break that record he jointly holds with Roy Emerson. But its going to be tough sailing for the Serbian. He is just making a comeback from the elbow injury and he may be facing a rampant Federer, who knows a thing or two about comebacks, in the semis.
